HPC and Sustainability: How Efficiently Are We Using Our Cluster?

King's Climate and Sustainability Month, February 2026

Introduction

An High Performance Computing (HPC) cluster is a shared resource — and like any shared resource, how we use it affects everyone. Every computing processing unit (CPU) reserved but unused, every gigabyte of memory allocated but never touched, is a resource that another researcher's job is queuing for. As part of King's Climate and Sustainability Month in February, we analysed six months of job data (July–December 2025) from the CREATE HPC cluster to find out: how efficiently are we actually using our resources?
